If you follow me on Twitter, you might have seen me talk about my recent quest into self-tanning. Before now, I never really bothered about self-tanning products as I usually caught some sun quite easily but for some reason, this year my legs have been struggling to keep up and needed a helping hand!
I thought I’d give some tanning products a go, though housing a little fear that I might end up as one of those disaster stories you hear about – I was picturing tiger like stripes and odd discolouration! I’d heard good things about St. Tropez as a brand and thought I would start my journey here. Today, I wanted to write a little first impressions/review style post about the St. Tropez Gradual Tan Tinted Body Lotion. I was a bit too scared to try a proper fake tan mousse or spray as a tan-newbie so picked up this tinted body lotion instead – the aim is to ease myself in!
I have to admit, at £9/10, I did think it was quite expensive but this might just be me being naive about the cost of self tanning – let me know if this is expected? However, I would say it was worth the money to some extent.
When I first used it, I saw instant results which is exactly what I wanted. My skin felt soft, had such a nice glow and, of course, had darkened to a nice, natural-looking tan. I found that it didn’t stain my hands (disaster averted!) and also had a really nice smell – not one I would obviously determine as fake tan. Though the colour was good, I think the best quality of the product was the glow. I felt like I’d been away, sunning myself on the beach and had that amazing summer holiday shine to my skin!
This picture shows the immediate effect with one leg with the product and one without.
After applying the product to my other left, I left it for a few hours to see if there was a difference. Before I went to bed, I noticed that the colour had deepened, which you can see in the picture below, and I absolutely loved it. The glow was still there and my skin felt soft and sun-kissed. It was exactly what I had been looking for.
I have to say, the next day, I had found that it had faded and there were some noticeable marks around my knees and ankles. Whilst expected, I was looking for something that would last a little bit longer. However, I read on the product that it is for everyday use which, I imagine, would keep it topped up and reduce fading effect. I haven’t kept up to this as, frankly, I don’t have the time and patience to keep exfoliating and moisturising to keep my tan looking tip-top, but I feel like it would work really well if it was used in this way. I might try a week of keeping the regime up and doing a follow-up post if anyone is interested.
I personally think this is a great product for either a quick top-up or an instant fix for a specific occasion – I’m definitely going to be applying before a night out or in the morning when I know my legs will be on show that day. As the first self-tanning product I’ve tried, I’ve got pretty good results! I’m quite excited to keep using it and perhaps expanding my horizons into different brands and product types.
